No, no, calm down, just kidding!

Our Veggie Drinks night is not a big booze up. And everyone from vegan to vegetarian to flexitarian is welcome. You can order a Perrier if you want or just some appetizers. Chivana has great veggie appetizers.

We started this mix and mingle night because a lot of people expressed an interest in having more events where people could meet new friends who shared their values.

The great thing about Veggie Drinks Night is there's more mingling than at a dine-out, where you tend to sit with the same people all night. And you can leave whenever you want. But do register so we save a seat for you:

www.meetup.com/Vancouver-Meatless-Meetup

UK Nicholas Stern's call to abandon meat to save the planet

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/environment/article6891362.ece
Climate chief Lord Stern: give up meat to save the planet

People will need to turn vegetarian if the world is to conquer climate change, according to a
leading authority on global warming. In an interview with The Times, Lord Stern of Brentford said: "Meat is a wasteful use of water
and creates a lot of greenhouse gases. It puts enormous pressure on the world's resources. .... Direct emissions of methane from cows and pigs is a significant source of greenhouse gases. Methane is 23 times more powerful than carbon dioxide as a global warming gas.
.....
Lord Stern, who said that he was not a strict vegetarian himself, was speaking on the eve of an
all-parliamentary debate on climate change. His remarks provoked anger from the meat industry.
.....
Jonathan Scurlock, of the National Farmers Union, said: "Going vegetarian is not a worldwide
solution. .....We don't have a methane-free cow or pig available to us."
On average, a British person eats 50g of protein derived from meat each day - the equivalent of a
chicken breast or a lamb chop. This is a relatively low level for a wealthy country but
between 25 per cent and 50 per cent higher than the amount recommended by the World Health
Organisation.

By Robin Pagnamenta, Energy Editor, The Times

How is that Spelt?

For many years Spelt Bakery was a terrific supporter of Earthsave Canada giving us treats for the volunteers and goodies for us to sample. They used to be in Commercial but they have moved onwards to a bigger & better spot. Check out their website at www.thespeltbakery.ca

The Spelt Bakery /Aran foods Inc., had it's origins at the East Vancouver Farmer's Market in Vancouver, BC, Canada in the summer of 1998. This was when people first started asking, "How's that Spelt?".

In December of 1998 we opened a retail bakery on Nanaimo Street in Vancouver. Less than two years later we moved to the Commercial Drive neighbourhhood where we have been for many years. 10 years later, the business has grow considerably. Janet met her new business partner, Christine, and together they propelled the bakery to the next level. We have moved to a bigger, better and much more brighter location. We now have t-shirts, hats and bumper stickers that have the "How's that Spelt?" logo at the top of this page. How's that spelt products are now in many stores, restaurants, cafes, etc. in Vancouver. The breakfast cookie is spreading all over, soon to be in every stores all over Canada & the US. The sky is the limit! It’s not for animal rights reasons but to set an example and to try and get people to think about the connection between what they eat and what we’re doing to the oceans,
because it’s quite simple, really. I personally feel that it’s the most important cause on the planet; more important than anything else for the simple reason as this – if the oceans die then we all die. And we’ve removed 90% of the fish from the oceans. Marine ecosystems are in serious situation and it could collapse. Two weeks ago the world's experts on coral reefs met at an international conference. The conclusion of that conference is that coral reef ecosystems will be gone, worldwide, in 20 years, and it’s irreversible. Nothing can be done now to stop that. That’s the first major collapse of a large ecosystem on the planet and that’s the first of many. This is something people have got to be very concerned and involved with because if too many ecosystems collapse, the whole structure comes down. That is going to bode very ill for all of us."

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://earthsavecanada.blogspot.com/2009/09/whale-wars-capt-paul-watsons-vegan.html' title=''Whale Wars' Capt.
